Network speed test on the command line

How many times have you needed to perform a network speed test on a server without a web browser? Sure, some times you can run VNC and launch a remote desktop, but it’s way too complicated for a simple test. Here’s how to quickly test the speed of your connection from the command line, be it Linux, Solaris, OSX or any other UNIX like OS:

wget -O /dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test500.zip

Or, if you want to try with smaller files (you know, when you are too lazy to ^C the process):

wget -O /dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test100.zip
wget -O /dev/null http://speedtest.wdc01.softlayer.com/downloads/test10.zip
